Earn your Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) certificate and show that you’re trained in the empirically validated, gold standard approach method for transforming relationships.

Couples therapy is one of the most challenging forms of therapy — and it can leave even experienced therapists feeling overwhelmed, disheartened, and unsure how to truly help partners reconnect.

Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy approach revolutionized our field by offering therapists a clear, structured roadmap to guide couples from conflict and disconnection to secure, lasting emotional bonds.

Now, you can learn this model directly from Kathryn de Bruin — a certified EFCT trainer hand-selected by Dr. Sue Johnson — during a three-day, immersive clinical retreat at Paradise Point Resort in San Diego.

Over three transformational days, Kathryn will guide you step-by-step through applying the proven EFT model in your practice, even when working with complex dynamics such as trauma, infidelity, escalation, withdrawal, and more.

You'll walk away knowing how to:

  • Map relationship cycles with clarity and create a clear path from conflict to connection for every couple.
  • Access deep attachment emotions that foster vulnerability, healing, and authentic reconnection.
  • Navigate stuck moments — from escalated arguments to sexual disconnection — with confidence and precision.

And because healing relationships begin with your own wellbeing, you’ll have ample time to unwind and enjoy waterfront dining, lagoon-style pools, beach bonfires, spa treatments, tropical gardens, and the peaceful rhythm of Mission Bay.

This exclusive certificate retreat can sell out quickly as therapists discover the approach that therapists call “lifechanging,” “the missing piece in couples therapy,” and “the roadmap I’ve been searching for.”

Reserve your spot today — and return to your practice with renewed confidence, clarity, and calm.

Here's what therapy experts are saying about Emotionally Focused Therapy

"When EFT is successfully implemented, each partner becomes a source of security, protection, and contact comfort for each other. Each partner can then assist the other in regulating negative affect and constructing a positive and potent sense of self."

— Sue Johnson

"[EFT] is really what is missing in behavioral marital therapy. It's all so intellectual. It really isn't looking at what is going on at a level of depth that really matters."

— Internationally renowned couples therapist, John Gottman, PhD

"[EFT] blends the best in research findings with practical suggestions from a caring and compassionate clinician. This fabulous technique will be of great benefit...to couples trying to find their way to better communication and deeper, more fulfilling ways of being with each other."

— Daniel J. Siegel, MD, Executive Director, Mindsight Institute

"Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is a deceptively simple approach to work with couples in therapy because the tenets, practices, and integration are so clear because there clearly is a lot of art to doing this work."

— Family therapy professor, Thorana Nelson

Objectives

  1. Identify the three stages and nine steps of the EFT model and determine which stage a couple is in based on observable session markers.
  2. Analyze negative interactional cycles (pursue-withdraw, withdraw-withdraw) by mapping triggers, secondary emotions, primary emotions, and attachment fears for each partner.
  3. Demonstrate the 5-move Tango intervention sequence (reflect, assemble, choreograph, process, integrate) through role-play with appropriate pacing and language.
  4. Differentiate between primary emotions (fear, shame, hurt, longing) and secondary emotions (anger, frustration) in couple interactions using nonverbal and verbal cues.
  5. Apply evocative questions and empathic conjecture to access and deepen underlying attachment emotions in real-time sessions.
  6. Construct therapeutic enactments that facilitate vulnerable emotional sharing between partners and create corrective emotional experiences.
  7. Utilize RISSSSC techniques (Repeat, Image, Simple, Slow, Soft, Somatic, Client words) to heighten and expand emotional experiencing.
  8. Implement the withdrawer re-engagement protocol by accessing negative self-view, facilitating assertion of needs, and supporting partner responsiveness.
  9. Facilitate pursuer softening by moving partners from critical anger to vulnerable longing and fear of abandonment.
  10. Evaluate when EFT is appropriate versus contraindicated and identify safety concerns, risk factors, and appropriate referral criteria.
  11. Diagnose attachment injuries in couple relationships and apply the 5-step healing protocol to address relational betrayals.
  12. Integrate sexuality assessment and intervention within the EFT framework by identifying sealed-off, solace, and synchrony sexual patterns.
  13. Formulate responses to therapeutic impasses (client-level, therapist-level, process-level) using specific interventions to restore treatment progress.
  14. Synthesize all EFT concepts to develop comprehensive case conceptualizations from initial assessment through consolidation and termination.
A Letter from Your Presenter: The Story I Hear at Every Training

"I felt like I was drowning in couples sessions. They'd escalate in my office, I'd get caught in content debates, and honestly—I had no idea what I was really doing. I learned theories in grad school, but nobody taught me what to actually say when a withdrawn partner shuts down or an angry partner won't stop attacking."

I hear this at every single training. Seasoned clinicians. New graduates. Therapists who are brilliant with individuals but terrified of couples work. The story is always the same: traditional training teaches theories, not the moment-to-moment skills you actually need in the room.

That's why Dr. Sue Johnson created this systematic approach—and why she personally selected trainers who understand what therapists are missing. This isn't about adding more theory to your toolkit. This is about finally getting the hands-on, experiential training that shows you exactly what to do when couples are in crisis.

This 14-hour intensive is the training therapists tell me they desperately wish they'd had from the beginning.

No more wondering if you're making it worse. No more dreading that next couples session. Just a clear roadmap, proven interventions, and the confidence that comes from knowing exactly what to say and do—even in the most challenging moments.

This isn't a lecture. This is experiential, hands-on mastery training.

You'll watch real couples move from hopeless disconnection to secure attachment—right before your eyes. You'll practice the interventions through role-play before you ever use them with your clients. You'll walk away with the actual scripts, the decision-making frameworks, and the Tango moves that transform stuck couples into connected partners.

By the end of this certificate training, you won't just understand EFT—you'll know exactly what to say when a couple is escalating in front of you. You'll recognize the withdrawer's shutdown for what it really is: terror of being seen as a failure. You'll help the angry pursuer access the loneliness beneath the criticism. You'll create those powerful moments where partners finally reach for each other instead of turning away.

This is the confidence you've been missing. This is couples therapy that actually works.

The tools, the framework, the demonstration videos, the practice opportunities—everything you need is here. No more fumbling through sessions wondering if you're making it worse. No more dreading couples work because you're not sure what to do.

This is your roadmap. Let me show you the way.

— Kathryn de Bruin, LMFT
